Cincinnati Bengals History: 2001

Cincinnati Bengals Record 2001:  6 wins and 10 losses

“With the second round pick, the Bengals choose Chad Johnson, Wide Receiver” said Paul Tagliabue Commissioner of the NFL.  The Bengals had juts drafted what would become one of their greatest Wide Receivers in franchise history and one of the biggest characters in Bengals history.

The Bengals abandoned their plans for Akili Smith, by acquiring John Kitna from the Seattle Seahawks. The Bengals would win their first 2 games with Kitna behind center, and sat at 4-3 through the first 7 games of the season. However the Bengals would struggle again losing their next 7 games as QB John Kitna struggle with interceptions throwing 22 while only connecting on 12 TD passes. The Bengals would win their final 2 games to close the season with a 6-10 record for their 11 straight seasons with out a winning record. Coach LeBeau was able to win 2 more games than he had the season before.  He ended the season with the most Bengals wins since 1997.  Despite the struggles RB Corey Dillon had another stellar year rushing for 1,315 yards.

The Cincinnati Bengals set the record for the largest crowd ever at a sporting event with an attendance of 64,217 attendees at Paul Brown stadium for the Cleveland Brown game.  The Bengals won the game 24-14.

Due to the 911 terrorist attacks and the events that followed that week, the Cincinnati Bengals' September 16th game at Tennessee was postponed.  The NFL season was extended a week to allow postponed games to be played the weekend of January 6th 2002.  Security was heightened at all the games after the 911 attacks and has remained more heightened since.
