Cincinnati Bengals History: 1996

Cincinnati Bengals Record 1996:  8 wins and 8 losses

After a year of debating and going back and forth, the Bengals finally found a true home on March 19th, 1996 when the voters of Hamilton County approved a sales tax increase that would build two new stadiums one for the Cincinnati Reds and the other a new home for the Cincinnati Bengals.  The new stadium would go on to be called Paul Brown stadium

The Dave Shula era finally comes to an end when the Bengals start the season off with one win and six losses.  The team was really struggling with turnovers especially Quarterback Jeff Blake.  Mike Brown Bengals Owner and General Manager hires former Bengals Tight End Bruce and the teams current Offensive Coordinator, Bruce Coslet to replace the Bengals worst Coach in franchise history Dave Shula.

The change turned out to be effective immediately as the Bengals won their first 3 games under Bruce Coslet’s coaching. The Bengals then dropped 2 of their next 3, but they closed the year out strong with 3 straight wins to finish the 1996 season with an 8-8 record.  The Bengals defense finally showed improvement and set a team record with 34 interceptions on the season.  The defense was led by standout Ashley Ambrose who was eventually selected to the Pro Bowl.

Another historic ending also occurred at the end of the 1998 season.  The Bengals left their training camp home at Wilmington College for the last time to move to a new and improved training camp in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Scored 349 points (21.8/g), 14th of 30 in the NFL.
Allowed 374 points (23.4/g), 24th.
Differential of -25 points (-1.6/g), 19th.
