For some reason, I am getting this feeling that I am the only one in Cincinnati who didn’t like the defensive coordinator hire. So let me explain to the unenlightened bandwagon jumpers and media types/Mike Zimmer lovers why this hire is the worst move in Cincinnati since the Bengals drafted David Klingler five rounds before David Klingler thought he would get drafted. First thing is first. Mr. Zimmer was the defensive coordinator for a team that ranked 29th overall last season. Yes, 29th. If I ever get a promotion for doing the fourth worst job in my company, please kill me, actually don’t because I obviously have a sweet job. You Mike Zimmer lovers are now saying one of two things, “John, Cincinnati was 27th with a bad defensive coordinator, imagine what they can do with a good one.” If you’re a fan that is using that argument, I can only hope that the next time you’re in the bathroom that there is no toilet paper left on the roll, then and only then will you get what you deserve. We are purging a 4-12 team of their defensive coordinator. I have an idea, why don’t we get Cam Cameron as our offensive coordinator and steal Dolphins quarterback Cleo Lemon, then we’ll definitely be good next season. Anyway, I digress, back to the point. Coaches are products of their players. Zimmer had bad players in Atlanta and talent wise; it’s not going to be much better here. It’s like trading in your ticket on the Titanic for a ticket on the Hindenburg. I have no doubt Zimmer will improve our defensive ranking, but then again all he has to do is not give up 51 points and 500 yards to the Cleveland Browns and that should move the Bengals defensive ranking up a spot or two.
Then you have the educated fan that will say, “This guy was a legend is Dallas, before Parcells usurped his power, Zimmer put together a defense that made four star generals cry.” To that I say this, great, Marvin Lewis was building defensive empires in Baltimore and Washington when Zimmer was in Dallas and now he’s one losing season away from getting fired. The NFL is a “What have you done for me lately” world and here is what Zimmer has done; his defense surrendered 41 points to Seattle in week 17 when the Seahawks were RESTING their starters. Seneca “All-world” Wallace threw two touchdown passes in the game. Michael Vick probably could have played in handcuffs and still scored against his own defense. Mike Zimmer, welcome to the city where coaching careers come to die. Or at least come to be in an indefinite coma until they leave the city to find tremendous success somewhere else. I can’t wait to see whom the Bengals hire as Linebackers coach, I hear linebackers coach Phil Snow of that incredibly awful Detroit defense is available. Growlzone.com Cincinnati Bengals News
