Tab Perry had surgery Tuesday on the injured hip that has cut short his past two seasons, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said doctors expect the receiver to be able to resume his career. During training camp, Perry said his hip had healed. "I think internally, he was having more problems than he let on to us," Lewis said. "He spoke to someone else and they said, 'Why don't we try this now and maybe we can fix you for good?' I think he chose to take that route because he was having some discomfort. If it all goes well, then Tab should come back and be able to play NFL football." The Bengals hoped Perry could be the team's No. 3 receiver, but he caught only one pass for 7 yards. Jones will start: Lewis said Levi Jones will start at left tackle against the New York Jets. Jones was benched Sunday after he allowed Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen to get 2½ sacks in the game's first 17 minutes. Andrew Whitworth shifted from left guard to spell Jones. "I think he has bounced back fine," Lewis said. "We're counting on him to bounce back. I believe he will. He's a pro. He's a very prideful young man. I know he's excited to go back and put his best foot forward again and get back on top."
Jeanty, Anderson practice: Linebacker Rashad Jeanty (full participation) and right tackle Willie Anderson (limited) practiced yesterday. Jeanty, who started at outside linebacker last season, was injured during the preseason and had a rod inserted into his lower leg in an Aug. 31 surgery. "It's good to be back in shoulder pads," he said. "It's improving a lot. It's good to be back in the huddle." Anderson missed the Chiefs game, snapping a streak of 116 starts. He has battled foot problems all year, though it was a knee injury suffered against Seattle that knocked him out Sunday. "I'm not surprised Willie's back out there," Lewis said. "Willie said all along that he didn't feel like it was as severe an injury as people wanted to make it out to be." Chris Perry could return soon: Yesterday was the first day Chris Perry was eligible to return from the physically-unable-to-perform list, but he didn't practice. Lewis indicated the running back, returning from a dislocated ankle, shouldn't be out much longer. "Chris has done really well," Lewis said. "He's working hard. If he doesn't have any setbacks here with anything, it should be in short order." Mangold reveling: New York Jets center and former Buckeye Nick Mangold said he is enjoying Ohio State's rise to the top of the polls. "I'm really excited about it," he said. "It's neat being able to say that my college team is No. 1. Only one team gets to say that."
