Linebacker Dhani Jones isn't sure how he fits into the Bengals defense just yet. He's just glad he fits somewhere. Jones signed with Cincinnati yesterday after the Bengals cut Andre Frazier. Jones has started 85 games in eight NFL seasons. New Orleans released him at the end of the preseason, and he was waiting by the phone. So when he was asked whether he was a weak-side or strong-side guy, he replied, "I'm a job guy." In other words, "Wherever you want me, coach." Jones will be put immediately on special teams, a weak area for the Bengals in the first two games. With linebacker thin because of injuries, Jones could see action soon. "If you put me in there, I'll be ready," he said. Jones, whose first name is pronounced Duh-HAHN-ee, had 93 tackles last season for Philadelphia. The Eagles released him in April.
"He stood out when they were here practicing against us," Lewis said of the preseason. "It gives us an opportunity to have a guy who's experienced, who's already been playing and knows how to play." Marvin, offensive whiz Defensive tackle John Thornton jokingly tried to look on the bright side of the 51-45 loss Sunday to Cleveland. Noting that Marvin Lewis, whose background is on defense, has taken a lot of heat for that unit's performance, Thornton said the flip side of that score has been ignored. "Marvin is an offensive genius," Thornton said. |
