Five Bengals miscues in their 51-45 loss at Cleveland
Leading 7-0, QB Carson Palmer's deep middle pass toward WR Chad Johnson on third-and-16 from the Bengals' 21 was intercepted. Johnson blamed himself for the miscommunication. All momentum swung in the Browns' favor. Ahead 7-3 with the Browns facing a third-and-7 at Cincinnati's 22, LB Caleb Miller dropped an easy interception on a pass toward TE Steve Heiden. Later, Miller was too close to the line of scrimmage and got burned by Browns WR Joe Jurevicius for a 9-yard TD.
Rookie cornerback Leon Hall's inexperience showed when he got torched by Jurevicius on a corner route that resulted in a 17-yard TD and the Browns' first lead (13-7) of the game at 10:56 of the second quarter. Trailing 26-21 at 12:38 of the third quarter, the Bengals faced third-and-1 at the Browns' 2 when Palmer got stuffed on a sneak, forcing a field goal. Seventeen seconds after Chad Johnson's TD (at 6:11 of the third quarter) pulled the Bengals within 34-31, the Browns' Jamal Lewis burst off left guard untouched for a 66-yard TD. "We had a bad day defensively," DT John Thornton said, "because people were not where they're supposed to be."
