Here are three things Bengals fans learned from Cincinnati's 27-20 victory over Baltimore on Monday night, Sept. 10, 2007.
1. DEE-FENSE: Accused of being soft, too laid back and as porous as a sieve, the Bengals' defense swung with the force of a wrecking ball, causing six turnovers - four fumbles and two interceptions - against the bewildered Ravens.
2. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: The Bengals entered the game with a 19-13 (.594) record at Paul Brown Stadium since Marvin Lewis became head coach in 2003. Make that 20-13 now. "The Jungle" appears ready to be occupied by tigers, not kitty cats.
3. COMEBACK KID: Deficits don't deter quarterback Carson Palmer. The triumph marked the 10th time in Palmer's career that he led the team to victory after trailing or being tied in the fourth quarter.
WHO'S HOT - Linebacker Landon Johnson and defensive end Robert Geathers. Johnson snatched a Steve McNair fumble out of the air and raced 34 yards for a TD at 8:47 of the third quarter. He led the team with 11 tackles and recovered two fumbles. Geathers had four tackles, a sack, an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery.
WHO'S NOT - Wide receiver Tab Perry and tight end Nate Lawrie. Perry fumbled on the final play of the first half and didn't catch any of the four passes thrown his way. Perry and Palmer clearly are not on the same page. Lawrie's face-mask penalty while blocking on a kickoff return pinned the Bengals deep in their territory and led to Ed Reed's 63-yard punt return for a TD.
INJURY REPORT
C Eric Ghiaciuc. Blow to the head. Ghiaciuc exited with a headache, but it wasn't severe enough to knock him out of the game. He returned to the lineup and is probable against Cleveland. Alex Stepanovich did a solid job in limited time as Ghiaciuc's replacement. PK Shayne Graham. Right hip pointer. Graham got re-injured on a missed 53-yard field goal try at 8:46 of the first quarter. His attempt was so short that the Ravens' Ed Reed ran it out of the end zone for 48 yards and pitched to Dawan Landry for 5 more yards. Graham's pain was severe enough that he couldn't attempt the extra-point kick following the Bengals' first TD. But he recovered and kicked two field goals, plus a PAT. He'll be limited in practice this week, but should be probable against Cleveland. Any setbacks will force the Bengals to sign a kicker.
