Bengals add Ivy League rivalry, IQs to roster E-mail
Written by Chick Ludwig

A college rivalry is heating up inside the Bengals locker room.

We're talking Harvard-Yale here, or is it Yale-Harvard?

The Bengals traded for St. Louis Rams quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on Saturday, then grabbed tailback Clifton Dawson off waivers from Indianapolis on Sunday. Both played college football for the Harvard Crimson.  Tight end Nate Lawrie, a free agent who signed Aug. 2, hails from Yale.

Why the sudden surge of Ivy Leaguers?

"I couldn't tell you," said Fitzpatrick, who owns a bachelor's degree in economics. "But I can tell you that the Harvard guys are probably smarter than the Yale guy."  Those were fighting words for Lawrie, nicknamed "Senator" because of his bachelor's degree in political science.  "That's a ridiculous statement," said Lawrie, laughing. "A bold-face lie."  Fitzpatrick quickly patched things up with Lawrie.  "He'll be getting a lot of balls in practice from me," the quarterback said.  Lawrie joins safety Dick Jauron (1978-81) as the only Bengals players from Yale.  Before Fitzpatrick and Dawson, the only Bengals player from Harvard was punter-wide receiver Pat McInally (1976-85).
