Winners and losers of the 2007 draft E-mail
Written by Joshua Troyer

With the 2007 NFL draft winding to a close, the thoughts of who was good and who was not start to fly around in my head.  So I decided to put together a list of the top 5 and the bottom 5 of this draft.
Keep in mind as you read through this that the status of any draft will not completely show itself for 4 to
5 years, as some picks will not reach full potential until that time.  Also, teams that made a lot of trades to set up a stronger future, stood pat in what they currently have in place but wanted to have the availability of mutlitple picks in drafts to come, cannot be fully evaluated, yet.

I'll start with the teams that seem to be watching Andy Griffith re-runs during the draft.

5.  Houston Texans - I understand you are an expansion team just 5 years ago.  When Carolina & Jacksonville were expansion teams they went to the playoffs a couple times each in that same period of time.  Way to take another risk, but you get to be on this list for not picking Reggie Bush last year.  As long as you pick in the top 16, you belong on this list for that pick.  I'm not sure this team understands the object of football is to score as much as possible on offense and try to stop the other guy when not.  BAFOONERY.

4. Washington Redskins - For having all the talent you have, ending up picking in the top 10 and not having another pick for a couple rounds gets you on this list.  Note to the owner, go back to the hole you came from, you were obviously more successful doing whatever you did there.  The pick you just made baffles me.  LaRon Landry nice player, you already have Sean Taylor.  I know you can play both of them at the same time, maybe the Colts should draft another quarterback in the first round to play with Peyton Manning.  Enjoy the cellar of the NFC East.

3.  San Diego Chargers - With all the great moves you've made in the past few years it's tough to put you on this side of the list, but ERIC WEDDLE gets you here.  Are you kidding me?  With that mentality, I'll tell you what:  I'll trade you a pack of gum and an old athletic supporter for season tickets this year.
What do you think?

2.  Tennessee Titans - Great draft last year.  Must have been a citizen's arrest at the time you were contemplating your pick this year.  What were you thinking?  How about some weapons for your franchise quarterback?  Did you think Chris Henry from the Bengals re-entered the draft to avoid his suspension?
Why would you pick a running back who wasn't even that good in the Pac-10?  Call Mike Vick & he'll tell you that teams in the NFL adjust the next time they see your scrambling quarterback.  Good luck.

1.  Miami Dolphins - I don't really have to say anything, but I will.  Cam Cameron, you have a year as an NFL head coach.  By the way, great pick of a kick returner with the 9th overall pick.  Matt Moore, the quarterback from Oregon State, still wasn't drafted in the 7th round.  He's better than Beck, you know the guy you picked in the second round.  Enjoy your 1 year Cam.

Now, the good.  There were many teams that did a good job in the 2007 NFL draft, but when coming to who did the best many factors must be taken into account.
While the Colts, Steelers, Lions, 49ers, Ravens, Vikings and Cardinals all did well, there were better out there.

5.  St. Louis Rams - The Rams win awards for what they did on draft day mainly because of what they did in the offseason so far with trades and free agency.
Because they picked up players like Drew Bennet this offseason, they were really able to work on specific defensive needs in this draft.  Remember, this team was 8-8 last year and suffered through many injuries.
They added depth and I love the second round pick of Brian Leonard.  The offense the Rams run with the combination of Leonard being able to line up at running back or full back and catch passes out of the backfield while lining up next to Steven Jackson is going to make them fun to watch, again.  Very good draft.

4.  Carolina Panthers - The Panthers traded down in the first round, picked up additional later round picks and still got the guy they wanted.  Jon Beason is a great linebacker with a great motor from that school that has a pretty good track record with linebackers.  Then in the second round they stole Dwayne Jarrett at 45.  The only thing better than this pick was watching Keyshawn Johnson squirm in his seat on national television seeing his replacement drafted, and then him spending the next five minutes trying to convince us he was happy with the pick.  Very good draft, maybe they won't underachieve this year.

3.  Cleveland Browns - All I have to say is 2 top 5 players in the first round.  You could spend the rest of your picks on me and it was a successful draft.
The left side of their line should be solid for many years to come, and they have a franchise quarterback & pretty good backups to sit on or deal for more talent.
One more thing, don't be shocked if Brady Quinn ends up better than Jamarcus Russell.  Great draft.

2.  Oakland Raiders - Franchise quarterback, possible franchise running back (if not hurt, would've been top
5 pick), Georgia defensive player (pretty good over the past few years from there), got rid of Randy Moss/the cancer (he isn't always, but he was here), and gave your team a chance.  If Russell is everything he's supposed to be, although I'm not sure he is a surefire can't miss, this is a playoff team next year.
Remember their defense was already pretty good.  Al, suprisingly well done.

1.  New England Patriots - The rich get richer.  The defensive help they got in the first round with Merriweather was great (off the field problems aren't problems in Boston) and the later round additions will add needed depth.  Anytime you can trade nothing for the best you are making a good move.  Randy Moss has proven, when happy, unstoppable.  Now, you have a system that promotes winning & team.  This team almost won the superbowl last year (late touchdown by Indy stopped them, remember they dismantled the Bears in the regular season, we know how that one plays out).
Sorry NFL, checkmate.

The last two days of the 2007 NFL draft were exciting, boring, frustrating and confusing.  Overall, it was fun.  Now, we only have to wait a couple more months to start watching some of these futures play out, right in front of our eyes.
