Unless you're a Colts or Bears fan, you can only wish your NFL team was in the Super Bowl. This brings us to the Bengals. Marvin Lewis is a great football coach, a leader of men who would be successful anywhere. Lewis can't help that nine players have been arrested in 12 incidents in the past 14 months.
The Bengals have the words down, just not the deeds. Word: "They long for that from me, to be the hard (guy)," Lewis said about fed-up team leaders. "So we'll make sure I give them what they want." Deed: Johnathan Joseph was arrested for possession of marijuana, but Lewis hasn't announced a punishment. Word: "People have talked about off-field problems. The bottom line is, they're all major problems if you don't win, no question. If you're not Super Bowl champions, it's a major problem." Deed: The Bengals signed ex-Iowa State linebacker Jason Berryman in early January. Berryman broke the window out of a female student's car, was arrested for punching a student and robbing him of $4. He also stole another student's cell phone. He spent 258 days in jail. He was kicked off the team for being underage in a bar. No problem now, the Bengals might say, Berryman is over 21, has a lot more than $4 and can afford his own cell phone. Ask a Bears fan if he cares about Tank Johnson's weaponry or Ricky Manning Jr.'s numerous assault charges, especially if they win Sunday. Dayton Daily News |
