The Bengals Defense Lined Up To Try and Stop The Patriots Running Game Its time for Coach Lewis to break out the “Do Your Job” campaign again. The Bengals suffered their first defeat on Sunday against the Patriots. A big part of that loss was due to players pushing too hard. Give a guy credit when he goes above and beyond his job duties to do everything he can for the team, but in the game of football, this is not always a good thing. It is this exact approach that may be hurting the Bengals right now.
It seems players are trying to do too much at times. They are pushing to do what they can to help the other guy get his job done and in the process missing their own assignments. Last year Coach Lewis had his internal team campaign “Do Your Job”. I think it is time for a new campaign “Get Back To Just Doing Your Job”. The Bengals have suffered some injuries to good players. This puts stress on a team and pressure on the players who are used to playing regularly. It makes players feel they have to do more than they are asked to do. This ends up causing missed assignments, added anxiety, and in the end a lack of execution which translates into a rookie running back rushing for more than 125 yards against your defense. Coach Lewis has always stressed do your job. He does this because he knows that pro football is about well thought out game plans and execution. In order to execute each player has to do the job he is given, no more, no less. When players don’t do their job, things begin to break down like they did on Sunday. In the NFL, it does not take long for opposing coaches to see your weaknesses. This is especially true of the self inflicted ones. Lack of execution will almost always kill a team on any given Sunday in the NFL. The Bengals are a good football team comprised of a lot of great players. These are guys who want to win, and have the skill set to get things done. This makes them even more susceptible to trying to do too much. It is time for the Bengals players to stop worrying about their teammate’s job and to just focus on getting their job done. I can assure you that if the Bengals coaching staff feels someone is not getting their job done, they will pull the trigger to get the situation fixed. This is not your Bruce Coslet Bengals where the coaches would just watch it week after week and let things continue on. This team still has some depth. The Coaches can make changes if need be, and have the skills to know when a change is needed. So when the Bengals show up for their next practice, I hope Marvin welcomes them with an old tried and true approach, “Do Your Job”. I think this would be good for the team, the players, and the fans. |
