Bengals Start Season With A Loss

The Bengals offense was non existent today in Baltimore.  The line was not able to protect Carson Palmer, and Palmer looked off.  Baltimore never gave Palmer the chance to really get set before he threw.  The rust had to be shaken off of the Bengals Receivers as TJ and Chad were double teamed for most of the game.  It was evident that the lack of time on the filed and the lack of reps between TJ, Chad, and Carson hurt the team.

The defense held the Ravens to 17 points, but the game actually ended with the Ravens having the ball inside the Bengals ten yard line when time ran out.  The Bengals defense looked alright, but once again failed miserably at the end of the game when they needed to hold the Ravens to get the ball back.  The Bengals have their home opener next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Cincinnati.

Carson Palmer has made a triumphant return from last January's devastating knee injury, Rudi Johnson is the fourth-leading rusher in the NFL and the Bengals are one of six teams with a 3-0 record.

In Cincinnati, the scene taking place on the football field is resplendent. Off the field? Well, the picture looks grotesque. Six Bengals players have been arrested this year -- and three months are left on the calendar.

Linebacker Odell Thurman is the latest bad boy. Already serving a four-game suspension for his second violation of the league's substance abuse policy, he was arrested early Monday morning on a charge of drunk driving. Police said Thurman registered 0.17 percent on a blood alcohol test (more than twice the legal limit).

Thurman's transgression came less than a week after Roger Goodell visited Cincinnati and talked to the Bengals players about what a privilege it is to play in the NFL and the responsibility they have to be role models in the community. Nice to know the new commissioner's words carry a lot of weight in the Queen City.

The Bengals' rebirth under coach Marvin Lewis has been a great story, and I'm sure the team's locker room is filled with players who are classy and good citizens. But the foul deeds of a handful are besmirching this team's image.

In addition to Thurman, the miscreants and their charges include guard Eric Steinbach (operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol); rookie defensive end Frostee Rucker (vandalism and spousal battery); rookie linebacker A.J. Nicholson (burglary and vandalism); and defensive tackle Matthias Askew (resisting arrest and two parking violations), who no longer is with the team.

Then there is wide receiver Chris Henry, who since last December has been arrested four times in three states and convicted twice. He has pleaded guilty to separate charges of marijuana possession and carrying a concealed weapon. Somehow, Henry has managed to avoid jail.

Lewis had this reaction to the DUI charges against Thurman: "I am not pleased. It's not right, it's not what we stand for, it's not what the National Football League should represent."

Lewis and the Bengals front office need to do more than talk. They need to fix this problem. If they can't, the league office will fix it for them.
