Boy, what a let down. First game of the year, everyone fired up for that first win. Then the game started. Has anyone seen the Bengals offense yet?

What a disappointing start to the season. This is not an easy schedule, and I thought this would be one of the wins. Since the Bengals have had the Ravens number the last few years.  I bet you thought it was going to be a win also.

The unfortunate thing is we sit here and recount and breakdown every single thing that went wrong (a lot) while the team has to get ready for the next game, Tennessee.

I think I'd rather see Vince Young in the game, the Bengals record against second string or rookie QB's isn't good, see Flacco, Joe as a very recent example.

Thinking of this week’s game took me back to the day when the Oilers were still in Houston and the Astrodome. The Astrodome, the eighth wonder of the modern world, which seemed to smell like a rodeo had just been there; it had. I remember when the Oilers scored, which was frequent when we played them there, they would play "Love Ya  Blue" over and over. I think many of us had nightmares after those games in the dome. Then they would have to come to our place, the Jungle, Riverfront Stadium.Anyone remember December of 1989? Sam Wyche and Jerry Glanville were in a constant feud. The Oilers were the dirtiest team in football.  They never seemed to hear a whistle. The Oilers with Hall of Famer Warren Moon at the controls running their spread offense with their small lightning quick receivers, Earnest Givens and Drew Hill.

Against the Oilers, at Riverfront, we always seemed to get off to a quick start and this was no exception. We got out early and just kept right on pounding the ball. Sam was not going to sit on the lead, he had the pedal to the metal the entire game and the fans went crazy.

We realized they had a gap in their kickoff return between the 25 and 35 yard line near the sideline on both sides of the field. With the score 45 to 0 Sam calls for an onside kick by Lee Johnson. I remember Lee looking a little bewildered at the call. We go on the field and Lee hits a perfect onside kick and we recover. We go down and score and Sam calls for another onside kick and we recover again. I guess Sam really didn't like ole Jerry. Sportsmanship, out the window, end zone here we come, again.

The Oilers finally got on the board and we got the ball back with a little over a minute to go in the game. We were deep in their territory and up on them 59-7, pretty comfortable. Not for Sam, with 4th down and 30 seconds to go in the game he calls a timeout, yells, "field goal." So, I trotted on to put the finishing touches on the “Sam buries Jerry” show. I remember Brian Blades coming over and saying, "watch your back, they are pissed." Ya think? During this game the crowd was going crazy, every touchdown and onside kick just fueling the fire.

Man we kicked their butts. That year we won five of the six games in the central division but ended up being the only team to miss the playoffs. I guess Jerry Glanville had the last laugh after all.

Here's hoping, on Sunday, our Bengals play as if it's 1989 and Jerry Glanville is coaching on the other sideline.
