Week One NFL Power Rankings and Playoff Picks

Alright Bengals fans, here are my three Bengals related thoughts following week one, first and foremost; if I continue to be a Bengals fan, I’m going to be impotent, bald and homeless by week five. Secondly, my friend Mel came up to me Sunday morning before the game and said “John, stop worrying, there is no way the Bengals can lose, ESPN says that no team has ever won their opening game with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback starting at the same time, so Baltimore can’t win.” On a side note, Mel’s goal in life is to tell me a statistic that I’ve never heard before, even if it’s as stupid as the one above.  Anyway, I called my bookie 30 seconds later, because if I’ve learned one thing in life, it’s that if ESPN, Vegas and Mel all think the Bengals are going to win, not only are they not going to win, but they’re going to lose so embarrassingly bad that I’ll have to take some sort of Advil, valium, heroin combination after the game.

There has been a nasty rumor floating around out in Bengals land that the Cincinnati Bengals are considering picking up Chris Henry.  Yes, I said Chris Henry.  This is the same Chris Henry who was cut from the team for various arrests.  The same Chris Henry who recently beat another rap in court on assault charges.

What in the wide world of sports are they thinking?  I know we need a third wide receiver.  I know there is concern about how the lack of a solid third wide receiver may hurt the Bengals chances this year, but Chris Henry?  This is the same guy who started the demise of the program, and an onslaught of Bengals being arrested.  This is the guy that every morning when he gets up, he must start the day trying to write down a list of all the places he could find trouble.  This is the guy who still faces charges for tearing up a strip club.  What is a guy like this doing in a strip club late at night after all the trouble he has had.

Since no one else will say, I guess I will.  The guy is a thug!  Where there is smoke there is fire, and yeah I know “people make mistakes”.  This guy’s entire existence off the field as a Bengals has been a mistake.

Ok, so here comes the kicker.  The guy has talent.  No one can say that this guy cannot play.  He certainly does give an already great group of wide receivers a boost as the third wide out.  As we all know this is what it has come down to trouble or no trouble, if you can play, you have a chance in the NFL.  That is unless you are Chris Henry.  He still has not been picked up.

The may be tossing the idea around (no pun intended) about picking Chris Henry up or this all may be a lot of rumor.  I have only one thing to say about that.  We all know wining is big.  Winning makes the world go around.  If the Bengals are dumb enough to give this guy a, I can’t even remember what number of chance this would be, lest just say eight chance to play for the team then they need to have their head examined.

Bringing Chris Henry back at any cost, even the cost of winning is a bad bet.  What may seem like a winning situation on the filed is a no win situation off the filed.  It is what we call a negative to neutral.  The best he can do is remain neutral of the same.  The worst he can do is continue to be negative.  That is having a negative impact on the team, on the city, and on Mike Brown as the Owner.  The time has come for all of us including the Bengals to let Chris Henry go.  That dog won hunt anymore, and it is one of the best things that may have ever happened to the Bengals finally cutting him lose.  I know the guy is a talented player, but he has had his chance and blown it time after time.  He is an accident waiting to happen.  I which him all the luck he can find out side of the Bengals, but please don’t bring him back here!
