We were playing the Packers at Lambeau in a preseason game. One of the problems with the preseason is you have some great young players who have played very little special teams, if any. They were the stars on their college teams and someone else played special teams. So, we line up for a kick-off with a number of young guys, hungry to make the tackle, on the field. The Packers receive the ball near the goal line and as I trot down the field I see our young guns running around their guys to the outside leaving a gaping, did I say gaping hole, in the middle of the field. As the kicker I need to funnel the ball carrier back to the pursuit, so that's what I did. As the blocker and ball carrier where making a bee line toward me, my only thought was, maybe if I can take out the blocker, then the ball carrier might go down or change direction. Well, they both went down along with several of my teammates who were in close pursuit. Basically, the whole pile landed on me.
As I lie writhing around on the field and can't get off the ground because one of my shoulders is dysfunctional, one of the trainers mentions that I have a stinger, a condition that makes your arm feel like it just hangs from you shoulder uselessly. A pinched nerve will usually will go away in a fairly short amount of time. So, as I slowly walk to the sidelines, my buddy, Tim Krumrie sympathetically approaches. We ride to the airport together; our lockers are right next to each other. " Breecher, what's the matter? you got a stinger?" " Yeah, Tim, and its killing me." "Breecher, he says, Welcome to the NFL.", then he walks away. That’s my friend Tim. I think I made more tackles in the 4 game preseason than I ever made in 16 regular season games. |
