Bengals five things you should know E-mail
Written by Clark Judge CBS Sports

 1. Chad Johnson is here, but he is not practicing. He recently underwent ankle surgery and is expected to be out at least two weeks. When Johnson recovers, he plays. In the meantime, the club sorts through a raft of bodies for a third receiver behind Johnson and teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Antonio Chatman is the front-runner, with Marcus Maxwell, Glenn Holt and rookies Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson pushing for the spot. "I can see us doing this by committee," said offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski. Don't be surprised if newcomer Ben Utecht, a tight end, joins the club. His hands are that good. In fact, his 31 catches last year for the Colts would've been the most for a Bengals tight end since Tony McGee in 1997.

2. Carson Palmer's brother, Jordan, is in camp and battling Jeff Rowe for the third-string job. Jordan looks like his older brother, walks like him and talks like him. Of course, he doesn't throw like him, but let's be honest: Few people do. If Jordan makes the club and is active, he and Carson become the first brothers in NFL history to play the quarterback position for the same team in the Super Bowl era. Though Koy and Ty Detmer were with Philadelphia in 1997, Koy was not on the active roster because of an ankle injury,.

 3. When Houshmandzadeh was talking about the strengths of the club he turned and pointed to a backup tackle as an example of the team's depth. Only this is no ordinary backup: It's Willie Anderson, a former Pro Bowler who's in his 13th season. "These guys are healthy, and, to me, that will be the biggest difference," said Houshmandzadeh. "Last year at this time Levi (Jones) was out and Willie wasn't practicing. With the continuity on the line, guys are getting comfortable and familiar with each other and that's going to mean a lot." Oh, in case you wondered, Stacy Andrews is taking Anderson's spot at right tackle.

 4. Defensive end Antwan Odom isn't on the field, either. He's suffering from a sprained foot and is not expected back immediately. The club does anticipate having him for the season opener, however, and it better. "He will provide us a first- and second-down pass rusher, as well as one on third downs," said coach Marvin Lewis. "That will allow us to apply first-and-second-down pressure without having to blitz."

 5. Linebacker Dhani Jones appears to have found a home. Signed last year as a free agent off the street, Jones made an immediate impact -- finishing as the team's second-leading tackler. Now he's the guy on defense who will wear a radio helmet, a sure sign he's dependable. But Jones' greatest value might be off the field as a veteran who can help others. "We've lacked that continual leader," said Lewis, "a guy you can count on and build on, which is one of the reasons we put Dhani in that situation. He's a guy who came in here and uplifted this football team through his experience and through his ability and who took off with it. That's what this football team needs: a spirit and a leader defensively you can build upon."
