Adam's Impact Has Not Been Felt Yet E-mail
Written by Bill Rabinowitz

When the Bengals signed Sam Adams in April, the mammoth defensive tackle was viewed as a crucial piece to the team’s run defense puzzle.

Five games into the season, the run defense ranks 25 th in the NFL and Adams has been credited with only six tackles. Only three were solo tackles, all Sept. 17 against Cleveland.

"Well, I’ve been hurt and I haven’t necessarily made 50 million plays, but I never made 50 million plays," Adams said yesterday.

Adams hurt a knee against Green Bay in his first exhibition game and has been trying to play through it. The 360-pounder doesn’t play on likely passing downs and often labors as he waddles to the sideline. He will have arthroscopic surgery after the season.

Brooks Passes His First Test E-mail
Written by Bill Rabinowitz

In an ideal world, the Bengals would have eased Ahmad Brooks into NFL action.

Taken in the supplemental draft less than three weeks before training camp, Brooks didn’t have time to learn the nuances of the Bengals defense. Though his physical skills were obvious in training camp, his inexperience was just as glaring.

Bengals Activate Chris Perry In One of 3 Roster Moves E-mail
Written by Chcik Ludwig

In an attempt to ignite the struggling offense, the Bengals pulled the trigger on three roster moves Friday.

They activated tailback Chris Perry to the 53-man roster from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list; placed wide receiver Tab Perry on Injured Reserve, ending his season; and signed rookie wide receiver Glenn Holt to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Chris Perry (6-0, 224), the club's first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Michigan, is a valuable third-down weapon who gives the offense a speedy complement to starter Rudi Johnson. Perry had been on the PUP list since training camp because of ankle and knee injuries, but he returned to practice this week on a roster exemption.

Trial for Suspended Bengals Receiver Henry Delayed E-mail
Written by Len Pasquarelli

Henry

In a move that allows suspended Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry to avoid any further potential league sanctions for now, Clermont County (Ohio) prosecutors have been granted a continuance in a trial that had been scheduled to begin on Thursday morning.

The trial is on charges stemming from Henry's arrest June 3 for speeding and operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI). There was no immediate explanation offered by the prosecution for the continuance request. The new trial date is set for Nov. 27.

A second-year veteran who was arrested four times in a six-month stretch of the offseason, Henry was suspended by the league for two games earlier this month for violations of the substance abuse policy and the personal conduct policy. His suspension -- which cost Henry $41,176 of his scheduled base salary of $350,000 for 2006, plus an additional $20,000 fine -- ends after this Sunday's game against Carolina.

No Talking Johnson Says When He Can't Back It Up On The Field E-mail
Written by Bill Rabinowitz

It’s so bad for the Bengals offense these days that Chad Johnson can’t even bring himself to talk trash.

The receiver finally caught a long pass Sunday — a 51-yarder that was 33 yards longer than his previous season high — but that was hardly worth celebrating in light of Cincinnati’s second straight 13-point performance and his diminished production.

Heading into a game Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, Johnson has six fewer catches and 124 fewer yards than at the same point in 2005.

Sputtering offense frustrates Bengals E-mail
Written by Bill Rabinowitz

The Cincinnati Bengals had an extra week to self-study and fine-tune. It did no good.

Instead of looking refreshed after their bye week, Cincinnati’s offense looked rusty in a 14-13 loss to previously winless Tampa Bay on Sunday.

With a brutal upcoming stretch in the schedule — Carolina, Atlanta, Baltimore, San Diego and surprising New Orleans — the Bengals might look back at the loss to the Buccaneers as more than a minor misstep.

Yesterday brought more bad news. Coach Marvin Lewis said offensive left tackle Levi Jones would probably require arthroscopic surgery and miss at least the Panthers game. Lewis said receiver Kelley Washington (hamstring) also would miss that game. With Chris Henry (suspended) and Tab Perry (hip) out, that will leave only three experienced receivers.

Suddenly, a season that began with three wins might be at the crossroads, and the offense is the surprising reason.
