Growl Zone Qick Updates

Cut down day is never easy. For a professional athlete it may mean the end of a long sought after dream. Sometimes, it is just a bump in the road. However, it is never easy to have someone tell you you're not good enough.

Remember the days when you were trying to make the elementary, junior high or high school teams and you had to wait until the coach posted the names of those who made the team? Or maybe the coach called your house? You wanted the news, but, you didn't want to answer the phone.

John Breech Week 9 NFL Power Rankings E-mail
Written by John Breech

The Bengals head to Buffalo this week in dire need of a win. I put all of my eggs in one basket last week and said that if the Bengals lost, the season was over, well, I lied. The season is not over, 11-5 is still possible. I am so confident that the Bengals are going to turn it around that I am going to fill out my playoff ticket form when I am through with this column.
If you’re interested in learning whose going to win this year’s Super Bowl, tune your television to CBS at approximately 4:15 Sunday, plan to sit down for three hours. After those three hours, the NFL can cancel the final eight weeks of the season and we can crown either the Patriots or Colts NFL champions. Better yet, we can crown them champions and then start every team at 0-0 for the final eight weeks. I think the Bengals would like that idea. Alright, enough of my tomfoolery, lets get to the rankings.

NFC

1. Dallas Cowboys- On Sunday night, the Cowboys will be playing in their fourth primetime game of the nine week old season. Someone in the NFL scheduling office must be a big Cowboys fan or maybe they just have a crush on Tony Romo. Either way, I’ll take Dallas over the Eagles 27-21.

Lewis wants to see consistency on defense E-mail
Written by Chick Ludwig

Consistency is a religion for Marvin Lewis.

As a former defensive coordinator, the Bengals head coach doesn't think one big hit erases one missed tackle. Lewis also has no real affinity for boasting.  "We don't want to come up and make one play and jump around and beat my chest," Lewis said in the wake of Pittsburgh's 24-13 win over Cincinnati this past Sunday. "Let's have 60 plays of that. ... Let's get that started, and let's have some fun with that."

Facing a capable Buffalo team Sunday with Marshawn Lynch at running back, the Bengals can ill afford more missed tackles like those against Pittsburgh.  The Bengals had trouble wrapping up 6-foot-5, 241-pound Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. But in one instance, linebacker Landon Johnson also couldn't bring down Pittsburgh backup fullback Carey Davis, who turned a 6-yard loss into a 5-yard gain.  "Part of it is mental, but also in practice, we have a tackling circuit that we do," said Johnson, who leads the Bengals with 51 tackles. "It's more of a mind-set. You've got to want to be better tacklers."

BENGALS' Chad Johnson speaks out...'Selfish is good' E-mail
Written by Chick Ludwig

In the football gospel according to Chad Johnson, selfish is good - even if it rubs teammates the wrong way.  The Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver broke seven days of silence on Tuesday in an interview with ESPN Radio's Stephen A. Smith.  Johnson called himself an easy target for the club's 2-5 start and said he doesn't regret anything he's said or done this season, including the apparel he used on opening night of the season when he donned a yellow jacket promoting himself as a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.

The flamboyant wideout also said he's happy in Cincinnati and doesn't expect to be traded.  "Everybody loves to use that selfish word and make it a negative," Johnson said. "Man, it's very much so a positive.  "You've got to want it. You've got a different type of breed that plays this game. I'm a different type of breed and I approach it differently from everybody else. I'll let you know I want it, and I'm going to let you know I'm going to go get it. That might rub off the wrong way and put too much pressure on those around me. If they don't have any selfishness to 'em, then that's part of the reason why we are 2-5."

Baby steps for Browns; baby bottle for Bengals E-mail
Written by Rob Oller

Both Cleveland and Cincinnati are hosts to gawky franchises still far removed from the adult world of New England and Indianapolis. But while the Browns appear to be adjusting as they move through adolescence, the Bengals are the 13-year-old emotional mess with attitude who distrusts anyone in authority and whose whining, squeaky voice is hard to take seriously.

The Browns offer an interesting study in childhood development. They opened the season like a delivery-room newborn, stunned and helpless as Pittsburgh slapped their backside 34-7. At that point, only a gambling addict would have bet it all on Cleveland sitting here today at 4-3 with a realistic chance to finish with 10 wins. The remaining schedule isn't especially threatening -- the final nine opponents are a combined 27-38; only Seattle, Pittsburgh and Baltimore own winning records -- and so far the injury bug hasn't bitten too hard.
