Bengals 2009 Draft Grades Are Out!

The Cincinnati Bengals received an A and an A- on two of the first 2009 draft grades to come out on the 2009 Draft.  Most draft gurus have ranked the Bengals 2009 Draft as a big success for the team.  One website has gone as far as to say the Bengals may have had one of the best drafts in team history.  We will post more draft grades to this article as they continue to come out.  Keep watching growlzone.com for the best Cincinnati Bengals draft coverage!

Fox Sports/MSN.com Grade:

Cincinnati
This has a chance to be one of the best drafts in Bengals history, especially if Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith and USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga develop into All-Pro performers. Both have the ability to be great NFL players. Maualuga slid into the second round because of off-the-field issues, plus the fact that he didn't call the defense at USC despite being a middle linebacker. But Maualuga is an upbeat, physical player who can lead in the locker room. Smith's bad body got him in trouble with some teams, but he weighed in at 333 pounds this week, plus Alabama head coach Nick Saban totally supported his status as a high pick.

Missouri TE Chase Coffman, 6-5, broke his foot in the Alamo Bowl game vs. Northwestern, but he has a pro pedigree, being the son of former Packers tight end Paul Coffman. Georgia Tech pass rusher Michael Johnson has great physical skills although many scouts thought he took many plays off on Saturdays. A local kid, Cincinnati punter Kevin Huber, won the Ray Guy Award as the nation's best punter last season. Grade: A

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor (Sports Network)

1 - Andre Smith, T, Alabama (6-4, 325); 2 - Rey Maualuga, LB, USC (6-2, 249); 3 - Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech (6-7, 266); 3 - Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri (6-6, 244); 4 - Jonathan Luigs, C, Arkansas (6-4, 301); 5 - Kevin Huber, P, Cincinnati (6-1, 220); 6 - Morgan Trent, CB, Michigan (6-1, 193); 6 - Bernard Scott, RB, Abilene Christian (5-10, 200); 7 - Fui Vakapuna, FB, BYU (6-1, 253); 7 - Clinton McDonald, DL, Memphis (6-2, 289); 7 - Freddie Brown, WR, Utah (6-3, 215)

Analysis: The Bengals had better hope Smith outplays Virginia tackle Eugene Monroe, who was widely evaluated to be more of a "sure thing" than the apparently immature Smith. Still, if he matures off the field and stays in shape on it, Smith should have the opportunity to be a franchise left tackle. Maualuga, who mysteriously dropped to the second round after being evaluated by most as a mid-first round talent, will have an immediate opportunity to start at middle linebacker and will be reunited with former teammate Keith Rivers. It would not have been shocking if the pass rusher Johnson went in the first round, so the fact that Cincinnati got him in the third represented value as well. Coffman, the son of ex-Packers and Chiefs tight end Paul Coffman, could be the pure pass-catching tight end the club has long lacked. Luigs is a pure center who could have trouble sticking. Huber, the local product, was the first punter selected and will be expected to shut the revolving door at the team's punter position. Vakapuna was a player the team coveted as its potential starting fullback of the future.

Bottom Line: Smith is a big-time risk-reward proposition, but give the Bengals credit for addressing obvious needs with well-regarded players.
